Fort Myers Fishing Guide Captain Bill Curtis

Great Week of April 2014 Ft.Myers Fishing Charters Report

April 21, 2014
One of my favorite times of year is upon us. The waters are slowly getting less crowded and the fishing is getting off the hook, but not the fish. I have fished several charters in the near shore waters from Fort Myers Beach to Sanibel in search of Tarpon. While I have heard some scattered reports of a few people hooking fish, we have only seen a few fish free jump, and have not seen one pod.

The good news is that the sharks are thick as can be waiting on the silver kings. We have hooked as many as 15 sharks in just a few hours, and have gotten at least a couple to the boat every time we have fished out front.

We are not fishing any steel leaders as the hope is for tarpon on all of the dangled lines, but the circle hooks are at least giving us a chance to bring a good number of sharks to the gunnels for the release.

Sharks to the boat so far have included Atlantic Sharpnose, Spinner, Blacktip, Bull, an estimated 8’ Nurse, and the first Hammerhead of the season.

The weather has chased us into the backcountry on a few trips where we have put the large threadfin herring I’ve been catching to good use on the inshore fish. Some large Jack Crevalles have made for some drag screaming fun, along with a pretty great snook bite on one trip.

After the first 2 baits got stolen, the third was the charm when the large threadfin got hammered and a giant snook broke the water when the circle hook came tight. My angler did a stellar job of leaning on the fish, with the 20# braid, as it raced to the mangrove roots hoping to escape. The slob snook barely fit in the net, and we gently cradled her for a couple of pictures before I spent the time to revive her, and she swam away strong. The next fish was another slob that measured just a hair under 33” and was invited home to dinner.

The same angler hooked another that raced into the trees and broke the 40# fluorocarbon leader before we had much of a chance. The weather chased us in on the last charter of the week again, but it worked out well with a couple of nice fish. First was a nice 20” redfish, perfect to filet out for dinner.

And the next was another serious quality fish, a beautiful healthy bronze redfish that measured over 29” and had to be released after posing for a picture or 2.

Well, I think that catches me up for now, and I look forward to guiding more great people to the chance for fish of a lifetime!

April 2014 Farming of the Sea Festival in Everglades City

April 17, 2014

Well, it’s been almost a week since the trip and my ribs are just healed and not hurting from laughing so friggin hard.

For the 13th consecutive year a group of guys from all over the country have converged on Everglades National Park for an annual sabbatical/fishing trip/drinking escape, where the participants skin better be as thick as an elephant’s hide or you’ll get eaten alive!

Its big fun where the guys leave the real world behind and let it all hang out, and I was lucky enough to ...

4/5/2014 Bass Fishing

April 17, 2014
I got a chance to take Kolton and a friend for a little Saturday morning bass fishing at BPS here in Ft.Myers Florida. It started slow for us with people catching fish all around us, and just a break off for me by a guestimated 5 pounder on a 2’ pink Barbie rod one of the employees handed me, go figure!

My boy Kolton finally broke the ice with a colorful Mayan Cichlid.

Then he fought and landed a very respectable bass.

Next, his buddy got one of the nicest fish of the day, a largemouth bass...

1st of April 2014 Offshore Charters

April 3, 2014
I just had to share a big milestone catch on an offshore charter this week. The sharks have really started to show offshore adding some great excitement to our trips. On Tuesday while fighting what turned out to be a 7’ or so Sandbar Shark that took over 40 minutes on 30# spinning gear, another shark was hooked on heavier 50# test 4/0 gear. The shark on heavier gear came up comparatively quickly and Captain Scott and I couldn’t have been happier to see the first ever Tiger Shark for eithe...

March 2014 Fishing Report

March 31, 2014
Once again with fishing almost every day, I’m not having much time for reports.

I’ve had several inshore charters where the highlights have been some very nice flounder, a few black drum, some big Jack Crevalles, and lots of smallish snook.

One of the more entertaining trips had us catching a few small stingrays before we hooked a monster one that had to be almost 6 feet across that we fought on 12# spinning gear for about 20 minutes before they handed the rod off to me to see if I could ...

February 2014 Charter Fishing

March 3, 2014
The weather has been absolutely beautiful the last few weeks here is Southwest Florida and the fishing has been great. I have fished inshore in Estero Bay and offshore out of Ft. Myers beach. The inshore catches have been dominated by some nice sheepshead, including one of the biggest I’ve seen in the last couple of years. With the mild weather we’ve been having the scaled sardines have been available, except within a day or so of a cold front, which usually makes a big difference on how ...

January 2014 Offshore Fishing in the Fog

January 29, 2014
What a great trip I got to experience over the last couple of days! I got invited on a multi-day long range fishing trip by the owner and captain of the offshore charter boat I’ve been recently working on. We left midafternoon to smooth seas and high expectations. The plans were to try for some late afternoon and night time snapper fishing close to the grouper grounds that we were going to fish starting at first light the next morning.  After a couple of drops the snapper bite was slow, alt...

January 2014 Offshore Family Fishing Trip

January 24, 2014

I haven’t fished much inshore at all the last couple of weeks. The inshore charter captains at the docks have had good catches of sheepshead and spotted sea trout, and I’ve read some reports of good black drum catches. I’ve been lucky enough to fish offshore on a few occasions when the wind hasn’t been hammering. Fishing has been fantastic out there with beautiful gag grouper caught on every trip that have to be released.

The keeper sized red grouper have moved a little farther offshor...

Fishing Into 2014

January 4, 2014
What a great few weeks it’s been with enjoying the holiday season and getting on the water almost every day. I’ve had quite a few inshore charters as well as a few offshore trips. The inshore bite has stayed fairly consistent with the exception of 1 trip, where even on that one we got a few fish for everyone on board. We are catching sheepshead under the docks, but not many that have grown enough to be keepers yet, as well as some nice black drum.

There are some Spanish mackerel around th...

12-13-13 Fort Myers Fishing Report

December 13, 2013
I’ve had several great trips in the Fort Myers area over the last couple of weeks.

There have been new friends on board, as well as returning customers, and some new clients, all getting to experience great trips in Estero Bay.

The bait is still available on the beaches, but we’ve been using some live shrimp as well to catch the sheepshead and black drum that are taking up their seasonal residences in the passes.

The snook bite continues to be excellent and there are some very large jack c...
